Meisterklasse Maria Callas (theatre in german language)
by Terrence McNally
Relentless, vulnerable and grandiose: Callas
New York, 1971, a sensation: Maria Callas holds her first and only masterclass at the Juilliard School. The city's singing celebrities sit in the hall to witness how the divina, who has a reputation for being difficult, passes on her artistic secrets to selected students. She herself has already paid for her high standards and ruthlessness with the loss of her singing voice. Two sopranos and a tenor work with Maria Callas on arias from La Sonnambula, Lady Macbeth and Tosca - each opera a milestone in her career. The performance as a teacher in New York, where Callas was born as the child of Greek immigrants in 1923, allows her to look back on the triumphs and upheavals of her life.
With ‘Master Class’, Terrence McNally has created a successful piece of biographical theatre. The production with Andrea Eckert as the ungracious, vulnerable diva at the Vienna Volkstheater has cult status: 170,000 people saw it over the course of eleven years. Andrea Eckert has received numerous awards for her work. The production returned to the stage for Callas' 100th birthday in 2023 and continues its successful run.
