Der Nazi & der Friseur (theatre in german language)
by Edgar Hilsenrath
Small fish, big guilt and outrageous camouflage
Itzig Finkelstein and Max Schulz were once mismatched school friends with a penchant for poetry. Now Itzig Finkelstein is a hairdresser in the newly founded state of Israel and newly married to Mira. But what she doesn't know is that Itzig is not Itzig. Itzig did not wear prison clothes in the concentration camp, but an SS uniform. And he only suffered mortal fear when the partisans stopped the SS troops' trucks and he was in danger of starving and freezing to death in the forest. Itzig Finkelstein is in fact the mass murderer Max Schulz. A small fish, but one of the best. The fact that he has always looked like the common caricature of a Jew is used by Max Schulz after the end of the war to make his way to Palestine with a bag full of gold teeth and a stolen Jewish identity, where he makes his mark in the fight for the Jewish state. A big cover for a small fish.
Edgar Hilsenrath, who himself only narrowly escaped the Holocaust, succeeded in creating a bloody picaresque novel with "Der Nazi & der Friseur", which director Monique Hamelmann staged with two extremely versatile actors and a great sense for the comic in the tragic.
